CANBERRA, March 18 (Xinhua) -- About 250 asylum seekers launched a four-hour riot overnight and burnt down parts of the main Christmas Island detention center, Australian Federal Police (AFP) confirmed on Friday.
According to the Department of Immigration, the unrest started at 8:00 pm (local time) on Thursday and lasted until around midnight.
Between 200 and 250 detainees were involved in a range of violent behavior including rock throwing, vandalism, arson and theft.
